When Does an Extinguisher Need 6-Year Maintenance or Recharge?
Stored-pressure extinguishers may need internal maintenance, recharge, repair, or replacement depending on age, condition, discharge history, and manufacturer requirements.
Extinguishers do not stay serviceable forever just because the gauge looks acceptable. Some units require deeper maintenance at set intervals, and any unit that has been discharged usually needs recharge before it can be placed back in service.
Six-year maintenance may involve opening the extinguisher, inspecting internal components, replacing service parts, recharging the unit, and marking the service correctly. The exact need depends on extinguisher type, age, condition, and applicable requirements.
If the unit is badly corroded, damaged, obsolete, missing parts, or no longer economical to service, replacement may be the better recommendation. The inspection report should make the reason clear.
